LET'S
DISCUSS

Question 1:

Think about the one child policy that China had in place for 35 years and how it created the 4:2:1 family structure. For every four elder parents, there are only two adult children able to care for them. From the viewpoint of an occupational therapist, how does this family structure impact how we are able to care for an elderly patient and the supports they have available to them?

Question 2:

Imagine that you are an adult expected to care for your parents, grandparents, and children.

  1. Considering the value of filial piety, would you be willing to sacrifice your work life and/or life roles or would you rather place their care in someone else’s hands?

  2. What kind of resources would you look for and what do you think would be helpful for you and your family?

We hope that this presentation has challenged your thinking and deepened your understanding about Chinese older adults and the oppression they experience in their daily lives.
